Introduction

Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 is a program that empowers even the most inexperienced computer user with the tools to create and launch a Web site or Web page. From the planning stages through the development process, this chapter is designed to familiarize you with the terminology and overall operation of FrontPage.

If you're upgrading to FrontPage 2003 from a previous version, this chapter describes how to prepare and install FrontPage 2003. The temptation is to insert the FrontPage 2003 CD and start the installation, but you can avoid problems by making sure your computer is ready for FrontPage 2003. Before you install FrontPage 2003, you need to check your computer hardware and software and make several setup decisions that relate to your computer. The Office Setup Wizard walks you through the installation process.

After installing FrontPage, you will find many of the same elements that you've come to know from other Microsoft Office 2003 programs. The components of the overall window contain the menu bar, title bar, toolbars and task panes that make using FrontPage an easy transition. You'll notice that many of the same functions on the menus and toolbars are the same as Word, Excel, or other Office applications, but do include many additions specific to FrontPage. Searching, using the dialog boxes and help features, along with getting updates from the Web and detecting and repairing problems, all work the same way as they do in Office 2003 programs.

Once you've familiarized yourself with the look and feel of FrontPage, you can begin using it by creating a simple Web page. You can insert, copy and paste text and get it ready to add more specific elements as your skills progress. After creating your page, you can save it to work on later.
