The animal on the cover of HTML and XHTML: The Definitive Guide, Fifth Edition is a koala. The koala is an Australian marsupial, the only member of the Phascolarctidae family.

When they are born, koalas are tiny, weighing approximately 0.5 grams. A young koala stays in its mother's pouch for approximately seven months. Unlike most marsupials, the koala's pouch opens near the rear, not near the head. Koalas have a high mortality rate and face extinction in Australia due to epidemics in 1887-1889 and 1900-1903 and unrestrained hunting throughout the 20th century. They are a protected species. Populations are rebuilding, but at present, they survive only in eastern Australia.

Rachel Wheeler was the production editor and proofreader for HTML and XHTML: The Definitive Guide, Fifth Edition. Mary Anne Weeks Mayo and Linley Dolby provided quality control. John Bickelhaupt and Ellen Troutman-Zaig wrote the index.

Edie Freedman designed the cover of this book. The cover image is a 19th-century engraving from the Dover Pictorial Archive. Emma Colby produced the cover layout with QuarkXPress 4.1 using Adobe's ITC Garamond font.

This book was converted to FrameMaker 5.5.6 with a format conversion tool created by Erik Ray, Jason McIntosh, Neil Walls, and Mike Sierra that uses Perl and XML technologies. The text font is Linotype Birka; the heading font is Adobe Myriad Condensed; and the code font is LucasFont's TheSans Mono Condensed. The illustrations that appear in the book were produced by Robert Romano and Jessamyn Read using Macromedia FreeHand 9 and Adobe Photoshop 6. This colophon was written by Clairemarie Fisher O'Leary.
